As a culture we struggle to know what to do with our grief and pain. We lack social practices and a shared vocabulary of grief to help us to make our way through it. This lecture will be a consideration of some of the Bible's poetry of pain, the book of Lamentations, to see what surprising and unasked-for help it might offer us.

What is beauty and why is it important to our spiritual lives? How does beauty help us as we do the work of caring for our souls? We will look briefly at the theology of beauty, consider its importance in our own individual lives and in God's greater story of redemption, and will think about how to apply this information about beauty to the work of soul care and the concept of "caring for the garden of your soul." During the course of the talk, you will be given a few minutes to contemplate the garden of your soul, so listen prepared for this bit of contemplation with a journal, sketchbook, or scrap paper to help you in this process.

In his sermon entitled "The Lord's Work in the Lord's Way," Francis Schaeffer called Christian people to a mentality of radical dependence on God. All too often Christians work for good things, but rely solely on human resources in reaching those goals--the latest programs, techniques and strategies of the world. In doing so, the church loses access to the power of the Holy Spirit which is offered to us in the Bible. In this lecture, we will revisit France Schaeffer's ideas about working "in the Lord's way" and discuss the relevance of his sermon for today.

There's no getting around it: we have to live with ourselves (and other people have to live with us, too!). How are we, as Christians, to go about "getting to know ourselves," and does this pursuit ever become a problem? If there are two guardrails that help keep us on the "road of life," one guards against plunging off the cliff of self-ignorance and the other guards against smashing against the cliff of self-obsession. We'll consider that second "rail" tonight, through a close look at the life of Simon Peter in the Gospels.

The "baptized imagination" is a phrase that sometimes gets thrown around Christian circles, but what does it mean? What does imagination have to do with real life, much less Christian spirituality, anyway? This lecture will offer some introductory definitions of what the imagination is (and what it is not) to help us better understand and grow in this powerful human faculty.

This lecture is a humble attempt to reconsider the often perplexing and confusing book of Revelation as a source of hope for beleaguered and struggling people of faith. It will consider the book's ancient context as well as our current moment to see how we might work to resist the pervasive inclination to fear and grow in our imaginative capacity to live lives of love and hope.

"The Monster in the Closet: Facing the Question of What to Wear."
Whether the question of what to wear is something you struggle with daily or something that has never occurred to you, we live in a world where getting dressed is far from simple. This lecture will make a case for why clothing is worth considering seriously and offer some particularly Christian frameworks for answering the question of what to wear.
